Senior Principal Software Engineer-FULLY REMOTE in Colorado

Splunk is here to build a safer and more resilient digital world. The world's leading enterprises use our unified security and observability platform to keep their digital systems secure and reliable. While customers love our technology, it's our people that make Splunk stand out as an amazing career destination and why we've won so many awards as a best place to work. If you become a Splunker, we want your whole, authentic self, what we call your "million data points". So bring your work experience, problem-solving skills and talent, of course, but also bring your joy, your passion and all the things that make you, you.

Role Summary

Splunk provides business critical capabilities to our customers. Our systems availability and correctness are paramount to operations for our users. If our platform becomes unstable or unavailable our users are effectively dead in the water.
This is all highly complex and challenging, and is where you fit in. We're looking for a technical engineering leader to bring their experience and expertise to evolve and drive the vision for our next generation platform.
This role empowers you to be a catalyst for positive change, driving innovation and improvement across the entire Splunk Cloud platform. Your ability to ideate, build consensus, and effectively roll out changes will be pivotal in shaping the future of our engineering culture and the experience felt by each and every customer.

Meet the Team

We are Splunk’s Control Plane Foundations infrastructure group. Our vision is to provide the underpinning foundations that support the Splunk Cloud Platform. Our mission is to improve: how we deliver new products to customers, how our engineering teams operate those products, and how our base layer services uplevel the design and architecture of our products. In our role, it is crucial that we provide infrastructure that is highly available, resilient to failure, facilitates business continuity, and is cost effective. We must do this in a way such that services are composable, extensible and simple to operate.

What you’ll get to do

Our group has multiple work streams across 60+ engineers and their teams. Although you may not be a frontline player in all of our initiatives the impact of your role will be felt across every single one. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of some of those projects:
  • Azure – we are rolling out Splunk’s product portfolio to Azure and are changing the way we use cloud service providers in the process. Splunk has a large and mature AWS footprint. Offering systems on a new CSP provides challenges and opportunities.
  • Next Generation Managed Kubernetes – our teams are migrating from a self-hosted Kubernetes infrastructure to one hosted with EKS, GKE, and AKS. This involves coordination across dozens of engineering teams and hundreds of services.
  • Database Services – our teams are designing and implementing standard approaches to data store usage for internal Splunk engineering teams. We are at the forefront of this work as we’ve taken ownership of the problem space.
  • Capacity Management – our teams own the capacity management space including improving visibility and telemetry for understanding the behaviors of highly complex systems as traffic usage evolves over time.
  • API Migrations – as our systems design and infrastructure is changing to support the business, we are migrating various services to a new architecture. These need to be done in a repeatable and adoptable way.

Must-have Qualifications

  • Track record of leadership roles in large tech companies with demonstrated ability to strategically plan and execute both incremental improvements and revolutionary changes.
  • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) operating cloud systems at global scale on public cloud services (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure).
  • Familiarity with hybrid delivery models, delivering software to both customer managed and cloud hosted environments.
  • Coding proficiency in one or more of the following languages with the ability and interest to quickly learn new languages: Java, Go, Python, C++.
  • Excellent communication skills and a history of collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Operational excellence: you think beyond feature delivery into how your code and systems are serving customers in production.

Nice-to-have Qualifications

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code; Puppet and Terraform based infrastructure management.
  • Experience with container orchestration, service deployment methodologies, and approaches for autoscaling. For example, Kubernetes.
  • Strong fundamentals in software engineering: data structures and algorithms.
  • Adept debugging and problem solving skills including the use of associated tools.
  • Experience with developing and optimizing CI/CD systems, test automation frameworks.
  • Knowledge of REST, gRPC or similar communication paradigms.

What we offer

  • A constant stream of new things to learn. You'll learn how our whole stack works, from service deployments to operational execution in the wild. We're also always expanding into new areas like bringing in open source projects and contributing back, exploring new technologies, and seeking new ways to make our ecosystem more developer-friendly.
  • Impact. We give our engineers an environment in which they can contribute from day one while also providing opportunities for learning and growth.
  • Skilled and dedicated peers, all the way from engineering to product management and customer support. We are an engineering and product-focused company. Our engineers take a leading role in designing, architecting, building and testing our product.
  • Growth and mentorship. We believe in growing engineers through ownership and leadership opportunities. We also believe mentors help both sides of the equation.
  • A stable, collaborative and supportive work environment. We are remote friendly and flexible. You can choose to work from a Splunk location or you can be in any US time zone and work with the rest of the team around the globe.
  • Work-life balance. We don't expect people to work 12-hour days. We want you to have a successful time outside of work too. We trust our colleagues to be responsible with their time and commitment, and believe that balance helps cultivate an outstanding environment.
