Director of UX, Observability

Splunk is here to build a safer and more resilient digital world. The world's leading enterprises use our unified security and observability platform to keep their digital systems secure and reliable. While customers love our technology, it's our people that make Splunk stand out as an amazing career destination and why we've won so many awards as a best place to work. If you become a Splunker, we want your whole, authentic self, what we call your "million data points". So bring your work experience, problem-solving skills and talent, of course, but also bring your joy, your passion and all the things that make you, you.

The Opportunity

As a Director of User Experience Design, Observability, you and your team are directly responsible for the experience of our products, ensuring they deliver insightful, invaluable, and ideally, effortless experiences. You will be a part of the larger Product Experience organization, reporting into the Senior Director of User Experience. We have a mission to make user experience a differentiator for Splunk in a market that is rapidly evolving and increasingly competitive.

You will work closely with our peers and functional partners across the company to communicate and align our design strategy with core business goals, driving outcomes through a combination of excellent UX practice and objective insights about our Observability products, users and spaces they operate in. The work you do will be invaluable in setting and achieving our objectives as a team and business.

You will lean on real world experiences in change management and culture building to support and mentor a dynamic team as we become a part of Cisco. Identifying opportunities for us to be better together will be imperative in creating even greater value for our customers and employees going forward. As part of this, you will have a direct influence on how we shape our culture and practice, enabling the team to not only deliver expertly crafted, strategically valuable work, but making it rewarding as a part of their career journey.

What you'll get to do

This leadership role is responsible for defining and overseeing work on key objectives, allocating resources and assignments within the team, managing budgets and travel, and reviewing and critiquing deliverables. You will need to be capable of providing direction, insights and coaching at a project level but also able to delegate meaningful work and provide clear expectations for your team.

As a people leader, this role will require you to build, mentor and inspire your team as well as play a part in the broader leadership of the UX Organization and partner teams.

You will be a great addition to the Splunk Product Experience organization if you:
  • Understand and have experience using objective research and a rigorous design process to drive business outcomes that are measurable and have clear, lasting impact to the business.
  • Communicate clearly and can articulate concepts to people at any level of the organization, including executives.
  • Have experience with strategic planning and goal-setting exercises across functions and business units.
  • Lead with confidence, while having the humility to admit when you are wrong or make mistakes.
  • Thrive through change and love the challenge of converting skeptics to champions.
  • Understand air-cover and creating space for learning and growth within a team.
  • Have a genuine passion for systems thinking and solving large, complex problems.
  • Comfortable navigating tricky or difficult scenarios with multiple, passionate parties.
  • You show up with integrity, have the difficult conversations, and grow the company in new directions.
  • Bring your authentic self to work and create an environment for others to do the same. You assume good intent and operate with the bigger picture and larger team in mind.
  • Are able to flex your style based on the situation; sometimes we hold lines, sometimes we build bridges.
  • Have experience evaluating UX maturity and compatibility of M&A targets.
  • Love building amazing teams as much as you love designing great experiences

Must-have Qualifications

  • 15+ years of UX design experience in B2B or B2C across regulated industries.
  • 10+ years of managing large UX research or product design teams at enterprise scale organizations
  • Experience working on class-leading products in data analytics, observability, network security, incident management or data visualization.
  • A strong body of research-driven, customer-centered design work that demonstrates success in informing and delivering on meaningful business outcomes (time to value, churn reduction, product adoption, active use, etc)
  • Ability to manage and navigate organizational change and lead through moments of ambiguity
