As a former college professor, I spent years in the academic world, guiding students through the complexities at the intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and learning and development. My passion for education has driven me to focus on bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience. That’s why I’m thrilled to lead the Splunk Academic Alliance program, a unique initiative that combines education with practical skills development to prepare the next generation of data and cybersecurity professionals.
Our mission is simple: grow talent today for the benefit of society tomorrow. We offer Splunk training and industry-recognized certifications at no cost to university students, faculty, and IT staff. This program is more than just a learning opportunity—it’s a gateway to meaningful careers in IT and data.
Through our product training and donation program and workforce development initiatives, Splunk offers academic institutions equitable access to the Splunk platform. The Splunk Academic Alliance program helps universities tackle global security and observability challenges while also training future data and cybersecurity professionals. The program includes a renewable one-year, 10GB license for Splunk software and access to eLearning resources for qualifying non-profit universities—entirely free.
We know that academic institutions have diverse needs, so we’ve developed three program tiers to support varying levels of engagement:
Foundational Tier: This no-cost tier offers students, faculty, and staff 21 self-paced learning courses, a lab environment for hands-on experience, and certification options.
Intermediate Tier: Building on the foundational tier, this level includes workshops, bootcamps, and additional eLearning opportunities in Enterprise Security (ES) and Security Orchestration, Automation & Response (SOAR). Live instruction and hands-on labs make learning even more impactful.
Advanced Tier: For institutions looking to integrate customized curriculum and live instruction into their programs, the advanced tier offers comprehensive support, including SOC models and cyber analyst challenges.
Our program doesn’t just teach technical skills; it empowers participants to become strategic thinkers who can harness data to catch, respond to, and prevent cyber threats. University faculty can customize the Splunk Academic Alliance program based on their current curriculum – as a supplement or core training path – to maximize the value of Splunk Education in the classroom. The integration of Splunk into the classroom makes it possible for students to gain valuable, in-demand skills and industry-recognized certifications that enhance their career opportunities and earning potential.
Take Cal Poly, for example. By partnering with Splunk, the university has been able to build a foundation that supports a full SOC capability, giving students hands-on experience in a real-world security operations environment. This collaboration not only strengthens the university’s security posture but also provides students with unparalleled learning opportunities. Check out the video.
If you’re a faculty member or university professor interested in equipping your students with cutting-edge cybersecurity and data analytics skills, we invite you to apply to the Splunk Academic Alliance program. By partnering with us, you can provide your students with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly data-driven world – and be positioned to create a student-powered SOC of the future like Cal Poly.
Let’s work together to shape the future of cybersecurity, one student at a time.
