Balancing personal passion and professional ambition is often a challenge. But Juan Ramos, Staff Technical Success Engineer, set out to achieve two big milestones this year: earning a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a professional certification that would drive his career forward. While they may seem very different, Juan feels the two achievements “intertwine beautifully” to contribute to his health and career.
Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu works Juan’s physical strength, flexibility, and endurance. But more than that, he says, “it also cultivated mental fortitude, teaching me perseverance and adaptability. On the mat, I find tranquility and shed the burdens of the day.” Earning his Blue Belt signifies progress, dedication, and mastery of fundamental techniques.
This year, Juan has gone from zero experience to Architect in 150 days, earning four certifications that have opened new horizons in Cloud, AI, and Security to him. Starting from Splunk’s Core Certified User exam to earning Splunk’s Enterprise Architect certification, each step demanded relentless determination and intensive study. “Now, as an Architect-level Technical Success Engineer,” he says, “I empower organizations to leverage data for actionable insights and transformative change.”
But how do they connect? Juan feels that “the synergy is unmistakable.” Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fosters both physical and mental wellbeing, providing the resilience and clarity he needs to bring his best self to work. In addition, his Splunk training enriches his life with new challenges and opportunities for innovation. Both pursuits required “meticulous planning and prioritization, ensuring both areas receive the attention they deserve.” Juan is able to combine the power of his personal and professional passions to stay present on the mat and in the office, which he says makes him more focused and productive in all aspects of his life.
While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or professional technology certifications may not be for everyone, Juan says it’s important to lean into and make space for the things in your life that spark joy and push you to grow. “If you haven’t already, I encourage you to take the first step towards discovering your calling,” Juan says it could be anything from painting murals, to collecting sports cars, to downhill skiing. Whatever it is that drives you, it’s important to acknowledge it, make time and space for it, and find the right balance for it in your life. “Share your journey of what started as an interest and evolved into a passion that drives your personal and professional growth!”
