Verizon and Splunk Join Forces to Advance Threat Detection for Enterprises

Verizon enhances managed security services portfolio with Splunk security solutions

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and SAN FRANCISCO – February 23, 2016 – Verizon Enterprise Solutions and Splunk Inc. are joining forces to bring analytics-driven, predictive threat detection to enterprises and government agencies.

Together Verizon and Splunk are addressing the market need for more sophisticated risk management solutions. Today’s enterprises are faced with a rising number of cyberthreats, making it challenging to maintain a robust security posture.

Verizon has enhanced its flagship Managed Security Services platform by integrating analytics from Splunk Enterprise Security solutions. The combination of Verizon’s platform and Splunk software facilitates the ingestion of data for enrichment with Verizon’s massive amount of threat context data that can be analyzed and correlated to provide more actionable security intelligence to enterprises. Verizon’s ability to manage risks is further enhanced by the visibility gained from owning and operating one of the largest global IP networks. Processing more than one million security events daily places Verizon into the unique position of being able to deliver exceptional insights into how cybercriminals attack and breach organizations.

Verizon’s newly re-engineered Managed Security Services platform offers differentiated value, including:

  • Automated incident response and security operations center functions: More threats found faster, security staff spends less time on low-value tasks, less human error.
  • Analytics-driven security: Deeper, more accurate detection capabilities than rule-based security offered by legacy SIEMs.
  • End-to-end visibility across all machine data: Stronger security posture from threats not “normally” seen.
  • Better threat intelligence: Ability to make more informed decisions.
  • Continuous device management: Management of complex changes and configuration of security devices.
  • Shared or dedicated models: Customers can choose from shared or dedicated infrastructure.

“Splunk is thrilled to join forces with Verizon as a flagship managed security services partner,” said Dave Schwartz, area vice president of global strategic alliances, Splunk. “We continue to strive to leverage Verizon’s knowledge and experience, and support Verizon’s drive to raise the bar in security services for the benefit of our joint customers and for the industry. We look forward to helping our users better detect, prevent and respond to advanced attacks through our continued alliance.”

Among Verizon’s new Splunk-enabled capabilities is the ability to monitor and protect many different types of devices, including the Internet of Things-connected devices which are expected to grow dramatically by 2020. Currently, most SIEM-based programs only protect network attached security devices and do not allow for expanded monitoring or correlation of data aside from security devices.

“Splunk is enabling our next generation platform,” said Vinny Lee, director of product management for Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “When you look at what’s available to enterprises today, it’s clear cybercriminals have the advantage. With these new capabilities, we are arming our clients with the tools and systems necessary to shift the balance and make it harder for cybercriminals to succeed.”

Verizon is also using near real-time insights provided by Splunk software to power Verizon’s Advanced Security Operations Center (ASOC) solution. This offering allows clients’ data to reside entirely in their own environment, while Verizon provides SOC functions either remotely or via on-site, dedicated security staff. Clients can choose and benefit from Splunk security analytics to gain efficiencies, end-to-end security context and superior intelligence over legacy SIEM-based systems.

Last fall Verizon was awarded the Frost & Sullivan 2015 Global Network Security New Product Innovation Award for The DBIR app for Splunk. This free downloadable app helps take the guesswork out of cyberthreats by harnessing the rich historical breach intelligence gathered by Verizon’s data breach investigations team over the past decade and making it actionable with Splunk security solutions.
