Big Data Gets a Boost from Splunk and Hortonworks Strategic Alliance

Big Data Leaders Enable Operational Intelligence for the Open Source Apache Hadoop Ecosystem

SAN FRANCISCO - May 23, 2013Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), the leading software platform for real-time operational intelligence, and Hortonworks, a leading contributor to Apache™ Hadoop®, today announced a strategic alliance to enable organizations to gain operational intelligence using open source Apache Hadoop. The alliance ensures that organizations can take advantage of Splunk® Enterprise and Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) utilizing Splunk Hadoop Connect, which easily and reliably moves data between Splunk Enterprise and Hadoop.

"Splunk Enterprise delivers more value as organizations integrate larger and more diverse datasets to the platform. Hortonworks, with its open source roots and ability to operate on Microsoft®Windows Server, brings an entirely new data proposition to Splunk customers utilizing Hadoop," said Bill Gaylord, senior vice president of business development, Splunk. "The integration of HDP and Splunk Hadoop Connect opens up exciting new data possibilities. For example, customers can easily use Splunk Enterprise to collect machine data from across the organization and deliver it to Hadoop for batch analytics. Likewise, the output of Hadoop jobs can be imported into Splunk Enterprise for rapid analysis and visualization."

"Developers who combine HDP and Splunk Enterprise can realize true end-to-end big data analytics with less workload and more payoff," said Shaun Connolly, vice president of corporate strategy, Hortonworks. "HDP is the only 100-percent open source data management platform for Apache Hadoop and the only distribution available for Windows Server. The alliance with Splunk will help extend the Apache Hadoop ecosystem and further drive open source community innovation for the next-generation enterprise data platform."

Neustar, a trusted provider of real-time information and analysis to the Internet, telecommunications, information services, financial services, retail, media and advertising sectors utilizes both Splunk Enterprise and HDP to help its customers promote and protect their businesses.

"Data and analytics are at the heart of Neustar's products, and that's why we rely on both Splunk and Hortonworks," said Mike Peterson, vice president of platforms and data architecture, Neustar. "Splunk Enterprise monitors and analyzes the infrastructure of Neustar Media Operations and is vital to the reliability of flagship products like UltraViolet, and HDP is our trusted Hadoop distribution for a wide range of data storage and batch MapReduce processing. Splunk Hadoop Connect will allow us to make our products more valuable to our customers."
